A common option at the fish and chip shop, plaice is a very popular commercial fish species. The stock has been severely overfished in the past but is now bouncing back in places, and on a global scale is a species of least concern by IUCN. As with other flatfish species, the plaice begins life looking much more like other fish. As it grows up, however, it’s left eye migrates over to its right side so that it can see while resting on the sea’s surface. This makes it a ‘right-eyed flatfish’.
